Burley Witch: Forest Folklore, Village Charm & a Fragrance Inspired by Mystery

Deep within the New Forest National Park lies the enchanting village of Burley, a place long associated with folklore, forest legends, and a gentle sense of mystery. With ponies roaming the lanes, woodland pressing close to the village edge, and stories lingering in the air, Burley feels wonderfully different to anywhere else in the Forest. It’s this unique atmosphere, soft, wild, and quietly magical that inspired our Burley Witch fragrance.
The Folklore & History of Burley
Burley is perhaps best known for its long-standing connection to witchcraft and folklore. In the 1950s, the village became associated with Sybil Leek, a self-proclaimed witch, astrologer, and author who lived locally and brought national attention to Burley’s mystical reputation. Whether viewed as folklore, history, or something in between, Burley’s identity became entwined with ideas of magic, intuition, and the unseen rhythms of the Forest. Even today, that sense of mystery remains, not in a theatrical way, but as a gentle undercurrent that makes Burley feel quietly intriguing.
A Village That Feels Soft, Wild & Untamed
Burley is surrounded by open heathland and woodland, and is one of the only villages in the New Forest to still have ponies wandering freely in the village center and village streets. There’s a softness to the place, thatched cottages, forest-edge gardens, and woodland lanes that invite slow wandering. Unlike busier villages, Burley feels slightly removed from time. Life moves gently here, shaped by nature rather than schedules. It’s a place where imagination feels close, and creativity comes naturally. That balance of wildness and calm became the heart of our Burley Witch fragrance.

Bringing Burley’s Magic Home
The Burley Witch candle was created to capture a feeling rather than a story. The softness of woodland light, the creativity sparked by folklore, and the comfort of nature close by. Burley Witch brings a little piece of the Forest’s mystery into your home.
The Burley Witch Fragrance
Burley Witch is a beautifully unusual scent, soft, creamy, and atmospheric, with a subtle depth that slowly reveals itself. It’s inspired by woodland shade, warm earth, and the quiet magic of Burley’s folklore.
Top notes - Fig Tree Leaves
Heart notes - Coconut Milk, White Florals
Base notes - Cedarwood, Musk
Green fig leaves open the fragrance with a natural, almost sun-dappled freshness. The heart brings a soft creaminess from coconut milk, blended with gentle white florals that feel elegant rather than sweet. Cedarwood and musk ground the scent, giving it warmth, depth, and a comforting finish. The result is a fragrance that feels both light and earthy and modern, feminine, and quietly enchanting.
