The Knightwood: Ancient Oaks, Woodland Majesty & a Fragrance
Inspired by Bolderwood

Deep within the New Forest National Park, near the peaceful woodland of Bolderwood, stands one of the Forest’s most remarkable natural landmarks, the Knightwood Oak. With its vast branches, ancient trunk, and quiet presence, it has stood watch over the Forest for centuries, embodying strength, history, and the enduring spirit of the New Forest.
It’s this sense of grandeur and grounded power that inspired our The Knightwood fragrance a scent that feels both invigorating and deep, fresh and smoky, alive and timeless.
The Story of the Knightwood Oak
The Knightwood Oak is believed to be one of the oldest and largest oak trees in the New Forest, with an estimated age of over 400 years. Standing in a quiet clearing near Bolderwood, it has witnessed centuries of changing seasons, passing travellers, and evolving Forest traditions. Surrounded by ancient woodland and frequented by deer, ponies, and walkers, the tree feels less like an object and more like a presence, a living symbol of the Forest’s resilience and quiet majesty. For generations, visitors have paused beneath its branches, drawn by its scale and stillness. It’s a place that invites reflection, grounding, and awe.
The Tradition of Pollarding
One of the most fascinating features of the Knightwood Oak is its distinctive shape, created through the traditional practice of pollarding. For centuries, trees in the New Forest were carefully managed in this way, with branches cut back at regular intervals to encourage new growth while protecting the trunk. During Victorian times, pollarding became especially important. It allowed commoners to harvest wood for fuel and building materials while ensuring the trees continued to thrive. The Knightwood Oak, with its wide, sculptural branches and powerful silhouette, is a living example of this historic woodland management.
Today, its form tells a quiet story of balance between people and nature, a reminder that the New Forest has always been shaped not only by wilderness, but by careful stewardship and tradition.
A Place of Strength, Stillness & Wild Energy
Bolderwood lies just a few miles west of Lyndhurst, tucked along the ancient routes of the New Forest and close to the sweeping woodland of Rhinefield. It is one of the most atmospheric areas of the Forest a place where ancient trees, open rides and quiet clearings meet. Once part of historic hunting grounds and later shaped by ornamental woodland planting, Bolderwood today blends native oak and beech with towering Douglas firs and redwoods, some planted in the 19th century. The area is famous for its Deer Sanctuary, where visitors can observe fallow deer from a dedicated viewing platform, and for its network of tracks and trails that weave through ancient woodland and open Forest. Bolderwood is also a favourite starting point for walkers and cyclists. From here, it’s easy to follow woodland routes into Rhinefield Ornamental Drive one of the most beautiful stretches of forest in the New Forest where tall trees, arboretums and gentle gravel tracks create a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. For those feeling more adventurous, the trails continue further south and east toward Brockenhurst, creating one of the most scenic cycling and walking routes in the Forest, passing through heathland, woodland and grazing areas where ponies and deer are often seen.
There’s a distinctive atmosphere in Bolderwood a blend of deep woodland stillness and open Forest energy. Damp earth, fallen leaves and ancient timber create a subtle smokiness in the air, while shafts of light filter through towering trees. It’s a place that feels both invigorating and deeply rooted in history, where fresh air meets centuries of woodland life. That contrast became the foundation of our The Knightwood fragrance.
